Data Loss Prevention For Printers
Ensure prevention of data loss with Pharos Secure Release.
Print Security Risks Are Growing
Over 30% of enterprises
report experiencing at least one print security breach in the past year
.
COST AVERAGE
The cost, on average, is more than $650,000 per event—a staggering cost considering that print is just a small—and often overlooked part—of an organization’s overall security picture.
Print security risks are diverse and come from many sources
-
Sensitive documents left behind at printers
-
Print servers used as attack vectors by malicious actors
-
Unencrypted print data transmission
The problem is that, for many organizations, print is a legacy technology that’s been neglected in terms of security. Rather than fitting into the enterprise’s security strategy, it often exists outside of it, leaving companies vulnerable.

Seven in 10 companies today say it’s getting harder to keep up with print security risks.
This challenge highlights the importance of data loss prevention for printers—critical yet often neglected components of an organization’s overall security infrastructure.
Sensitive financial data, private health information, intellectual property and more are all at stake, underscoring the need for tighter security practices around print.
Learn how Pharos Cloud and Secure Release can help with the prevention of print data loss, securing your print environment, and supporting zero trust security principles in a way that restricts unauthorized access.
Moving Print to the Cloud
A Strategic Security Imperative
More than 4 in 10 companies today are moving print infrastructure to the cloud, recognizing that cloud-based infrastructure is a more secure base than onsite print servers.
Pharos Cloud is an ISO 27001 certified platform that helps improve print security by
-
Eliminating onsite print servers
-
Enhancing document security with Secure Release print workflows to prevent data leakage through print
-
Securing data with
end-to-end encryption
Remove Print Servers as an Attack Vector
By moving print to the cloud and eliminating onsite print servers, companies can minimize their attack surface and cybersecurity risks associated with traditional print.
IT no longer has to manage server patches and updates to stay ahead of emerging print vulnerabilities.
Protect Print Data with Zero Knowledge Encryption
Prevention of print data loss (DLP) requires robust encryption that keeps information safe from prying eyes, especially during the printing of sensitive documents, and able to withstand cybersecurity risks Pharos Cloud utilizes zero-knowledge encryption function to keep your document content safe and hidden from anyone trying to intercept it.
Leverage Verification, Authentication & Endpoint Validation
Pharos Cloud doesn’t rely on the Windows Print Spooler—which was exploited during PrintNightmare—for print job delivery. Pharos Cloud:
- Treats both the user workstation and print device as resources to be secured and validated, acting as a trust broker to verify both user and print device identity on a per-session basis
- Can deliver print jobs over IPPS—even with uploaded manufacturers’ Windows drivers—to ensure end-to-end encryption of all communications. Solutions relying on the Windows print spooler for job delivery rely on the unsecured port 9100
How Secure Release Helps with Prevention of Data Loss
Also called pull printing or follow me printing, secure release protects print data by only releasing jobs to a printer when users are physically present at a secured printer.
How Does Secure Release Work?
Pharos Secure Release uses a secure print workflow that allows users to submit print jobs from anywhere and pick them up at any secured printer that’s most convenient, ensuring protection against unauthorized access.
Print jobs are encrypted and sent to a shared queue until the user releases them by authenticating themselves at the device of choice by entering their passcode, swiping their ID badge, or scanning a mobile QR code.
With Pharos Secure Release, you don’t have to worry about unauthorized individuals accessing sensitive or confidential documents that were forgotten and left at printers. The user hits print, and the job is securely stored until they are in front of the device and ready to retrieve their document.
Print jobs not released after a certain number of days are automatically deleted from the print queue. Not only does the secure release workflow enhance security, it reduces waste.
Make Print Security the Rule, not the Exception
In today’s day and age, print cannot exist as an exception to an organization’s security policies. Pharos Cloud helps enhance security and compliance of your office printing.
