Issue 2 February 2006

Welcome from Pharos Systems. This issue of our newsletter includes information about SignUp Vx3 support for Macintosh 10.4, a Blueprint 3.1 Tracker hot fix, the Blackboard and NACCU Conferences, and the upcoming release of a new Pharos EDI Server.

Redesign of Pharos website:
Pharos Systems has completely redesigned its website in an effort to help you obtain the information you need in as little time and with as few clicks as possible. In addition, Pharos has implemented the following changes designed to enhance the user experience:

  • Clean, streamlined, easy-to-navigate user interface.
  • Separate sections for the Office and Higher Education markets.
  • Content organized into well-defined topics so you can locate what you need faster.
  • Numerous application-specific downloads available at your fingertips.
  • Enhanced customer support functionality, including an expanded Knowledge Base and improved "searchability" by keyword and category.

But don't take our word for it. Check it out today at Pharos Systems.

All-in-one Print Management
Imagine the advantages of replacing a separate printer, copier, print release station, and network terminal with ONE device that includes Pharos Uniprint and Off-The-Glass solutions embedded "in-the-box"! We can offer you just that with the Pharos integrated Multifunction Printer (iMFP) technology, developed in conjunction with our partners Lexmark, HP, and Canon. That's pretty exciting!

The Pharos Systems iMFP places powerful software solutions directly inside the iMFP, including user-level pay-for-print and departmental chargeback, job security via the Secure Release feature, and the ability for users to print to the device most convenient for them, no matter where they are located via the PrintHere™ feature. Best of all, each of these features is accessible via a single, touch-panel user interface, The iMFPs integrate student, faculty, or employee ID cards with the card systems available from Blackboard, CBORD/Diebold, and General Meters.

Pharos Goes to the Shows
Important events on our calendar each year are the annual higher education conferences run by Blackboard and NACCU.

If you're planning to be at BbWorld'06 in San Diego at the end of this month, drop by our booth and check out the demo iMFP that's creating quite the buzz in the higher education world. You'll also find us in the Blackboard Connected Campus.

In addition, Pharos is running the Internet Café at the NACCU 13th Annual Conference next month, also in San Diego. While at the conference, keep your family, friends, and coworkers up-to-date with what's happening in your world. Or, just come in and pass the time between sessions. Tell us what you're up to and discover what the iMFP buzz is all about.

Hope to see you in San Diego!

Service Packs, Hot Fixes and Firmware

SignUP Vx3 for Macintosh OS 10.4
Pharos is pleased to announce the release of SignUp Vx3 7.0.2909 for Macintosh.

It addresses the following issues:

  • Previously, if all machines were engaged with active sessions, and there were no queued reservations and no scheduled reservations due to start for several hours, a reservation made through the Nerve Center for ASAP was assigned a scheduled reservation that overlapped one of the active sessions. Now there are no overlapping sessions.
  • The shortcut for admin login has changed from "Command - Return/Enter" to "Control - Return/Enter"
  • When enabling or disabling SignUp using the SignUp Setup Assistant, the Assistant would not require a restart. Logging out instead of restarting in this case would cause the login window to fail and would revert the system to a command line login interface. Now after making changes in Setup Assistant, the user is prompted to restart.
  • The ownership of the Uninstaller was incorrectly set in some cases.
  • SignUp is now compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). The new version is available from the Pharos website.

Pharos Version 6.1 Hot Fix 31 for Virtual Cash Devices
This Hot Fix applies to the NTS Master DLL, which controls Virtual Cash Network Terminals and Add Value Stations.

It addresses the following issues:

  • Virtual Cash devices allow users to log on with a card swipe or with a logon ID and password, entered via the device's keypad. In some circumstances, you may need to disable keypad entry of the logon ID. Applying this Hot Fix and setting the new registry value to 1 means that users cannot use the keypad to enter a logon ID. Users can log on only by swiping a card. However, users can still use the keypad to enter a password/pin.
  • Due to a limitation with earlier firmware versions, Virtual Cash devices were restricted from having a balance over 500, e.g. $500 or £500. Newer firmware versions do not have this limitation, so the restriction is now removed when this firmware is detected.
  • The application of this Hot Fix increases the stability of Virtual Cash devices, solving a problem where devices would become unresponsive (hang) in certain situations.
  • In rare circumstances, the software would credit a user's account by one cent less than the correct amount. The application of this Hot Fix prevents this from happening.

Pharos Blueprint Enterprise 3.1 Hot Fix 3
This Hot Fix applies to the Blueprint Tracker, and you should distribute it to all Tracker workstations. The Hot Fix is available from the Pharos website.

It addresses the following issues:

  • When using NDPS printers in a Novell environment where the printers were pushed to client workstations and have port names such as \\NDPS01, \\NDPS02 etc., the printers were reported in Blueprint using their port names instead of the printer name. The application of this Hot Fix ensures that the Tracker will report the printer name as seen by the user in the Printers window on the client workstation.
  • In the presence of certain printer drivers, the Blueprint Diagnostic Tool would fail with an error message when run on Tracker workstations. The application of this Hot Fix ensures that the Diagnostic Tool runs correctly on Tracker workstations.
  • The Blueprint Diagnostic Tool would fail with an error message when run on Tracker workstations using a French locale. The application of this Hot Fix ensures that the Diagnostic Tool runs correctly on Tracker workstations.
PSAL Firmware Upgrade
There is a new firmware upgrade available on the Pharos website for PS4XXX series Autoloader Network Terminals, which is compatible with the 6.1 release of Pharos or later.

Previously, when the Prompt For Password property was set to "No" and users in the Pharos Database did not have passwords, users that did not exist in the database were able to log on successfully and were shown the previous user's balance. The application of this firmware upgrade ensures that users that do not exist in the Database are not able to log on.

Coming Soon: New Pharos EDI Server .NET (7.0 Hot Fix 2)
Before the end of February of this year, Pharos will make available a new External Device Interface (EDI) Server on the Pharos web site. Although named Hot Fix 2 for version 7.0, you can run the updated EDI Server on Pharos 6.1 or later.

The new EDI version is based on the Microsoft® .NET framework and therefore needs the .NET framework 1.1 SP1 or later installed. Installers for the .NET framework are supplied with the Hot Fix package, but it is a good idea to check Microsoft in case a newer version is available.

While the new EDI Server's functionality remains the same, it is now more stable and reliable. It now runs as part of IIS and no longer appears as a separate service in the Windows Services manager.
