Pharos Mac OS X Popups

Quick Start

  1. Make sure that the latest version of the Pharos LPD Server is installed at your site and that at least one Pharos Spool Queue has been configured.
Important: The enclosed registry key must be applied before the Pharos LPD Server will work with clients running Mac OS X.
  2. Run the Popup installer to install the Popup client on your Mac OS X client machines.
  3. For each client machine, use the Mac OS X Print Center application to add printers.
Important: When adding a printer, specify the IP address of the LPD Server, not the printer itself. In addition, a queue name must be specified for each printer.

Description

Pharos Popups is a small client application which asks users for information when they submit print jobs. This information (username, job name, job password) is passed on to the Pharos Uniprint printing system.

Requirements

This release of Pharos Popups for the Macintosh supports Mac OS X 10.1 and later. It is not compatible with earlier versions of the Mac OS.

The Pharos LPD Server must be installed on a Windows NT/2000/XP Professional machine in order to use Mac OS X Popups (see below). In Pharos 5.0 and later, the LPD Server is automatically installed along with the Pharos Print Server. If the Pharos LPD Server is not installed on your site, you will need to install it from your Pharos CD. If you do not have a Pharos 5.0 or later CD, contact Pharos Systems to obtain the Pharos LPD Server.

Installation

Two things must be done in order to use Mac OS X Popups:

  1. The Popup Client application must be installed
  2. The Pharos LPD Server must be upgraded

Popup Client

The Popup Client application must be installed on all client machines that users will be printing from. Installing the Popup Client involves two steps:

Step 1: Install the Popup application

  1. Obtain the file Popup.dmg from Pharos Systems.
  2. Double-click this file to create a new disk image in Finder. This disk contains the Popup installer, Popup.pkg.
  3. Double-click the installer to run it. You may have to authenticate yourself as an administrator. If so, click the lock icon and type in an administrator username and password.
  4. Select a destination volume (you will only be able to select the startup volume).
  5. Click <Install> (or <Upgrade>). The installer automatically installs the Popup application.

Step 2: Install a printer for the application to print to

  1. Open the Print Center application in Applications/Utilities.
  2. Select <Add Printer...>.
  3. Select "IP Printing" from the popup menu and enter the IP address or DNS name of the Pharos LPD Server machine.
  4. Uncheck "Use default queue on server" and enter the name of the print queue to use. This must be an existing Pharos Spool Queue.
  5. Select a printer model from the popup menu, or leave it with the default of "Generic".
  6. Click the <Add> button to close the dialog, then quit Print Center.

LPD Server

Mac clients must send their print jobs directly to the Pharos LPD Server. The Pharos LPD Server must be upgraded to work with Mac OS X Popups. To upgrade the LPD Server:

  1. Go to the PC that is running the Pharos Print Server and LPD Server.
  2. Stop the Pharos LPD Service. Replace PSLPDSrv.EXE in the Pharos\Bin directory with the new one supplied.
  3. Double-click on the supplied registry file. This will add the registry entries needed to turn on support for Mac OS X Popups.
  4. Start the Pharos LPD Service.

Once the Popup Client and LPD Server are installed, try sending a test job from a Mac client, and see if the Popups dialog appears at the client.

Notes

The Pharos Mac OS X Popups application has the following limitations:

  1. The application does not support last answers.
  2. The application only works with Questions that are of type "String".
  3. This version will only show the default Username, Jobname and Password Questions.
