Berkeley College
June, 200
Colleges and universities are spending millions of dollars each year on printing costs in their computer labs. The days of unregulated printing are coming to an end as institutions have started charging for printing or for computer lab fees. In January of 2005, Berkeley College began piloting a print conservation program in all of its computer classrooms, labs, and libraries. Nine months later the program was fully implemented with print restrictions across the college system. Within seven months of the pilot implementation, the program had paid for itself, and after 15 months of operation, the College had saved over $125,000 in printing costs.

Daily Nebraskan

Students used to be able to print for free on campus. The printers weren’t top of the line and students wasted paper, but that was tolerable because it was free. That is, until the University of Nebraska-Lincoln implemented Uniprint, a laser printer service available at a discounted price.

Salt Lake City Community College
Fall 2003
In 2002, System Administrator Ron Wells and Lab Administrator Ryan Harrison put together a report on the printing supplies used in four of the largest "open" computer labs at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). Their findings were disturbing. During the months of October and November, the four labs went through 906 reams of paper (453,000 sheets) and 32 containers of toner, at a total cost of almost $8,000.

Massey University
January 2003
University computer laboratories work hard. At Massey University approximately 29,000 pages a week are printed on 85 high-speed HP LaserJet printers. But the legacy printing environment was increasingly unable to cope with the demand. Frustrated by the limitations of the system, student and staff users were disenchanted with the whole laboratory experience.
